There are fears tens of thousands of native fish may have been killed in the Wakool River in south-western New South Wales.
Wakool River Association president John Lolicato says he has seen dead Murray cod floating in the river and fears around 100 kilometres of the river could be affected.
Fresh water has been diverted down the river but it may be too late to save many of the river's fish.
